SEO is like riding a bike

The base of getting your web site ranked well is to think about how anything you do online affect the Google, and the ranking of your web site. Once that way of thinking gets under your skin, you can be assured that your web site will rank well. Any web site.

Every day you get up, shower, dress have a coffee and drive to work. We all do that more or less. If you take the most complex action – the driving of a car, you don’t think about it at all. You just unlock, put he key in the ignition, break, clutch gear, steering wheel, accelerate, indicator lights…. and do a million small task simultaneously, not thinking about any of those really. BTW, if you do not do one of those listed you might get some driving test lessons (here is a link to our local Driving school) ASAP!

Yes you should be using the indicator lights. No you shouldn’t be sending the text messages and checking email on your phone while driving to work. NO! Selfies are out of a question! Leave that radio while speeding in traffic!

If you didn’t notice there is a seatbelt listed above – you have just failed your driving test!

The SEO is exactly like that. You have to do a zillion things, and failing to do just one of them makes you fail. You site will not rank well if you forget to publish your sitemap, register it with Google, or remove your robots.txt after you are ready to go live.

This is why SEO is like driving, swimming or riding a bicycle. Once it becomes a habit, always to bounce every idea you have against Google, any web site you build will rank and rank well.

I agree that SEO is like riding a bike, but that implies that you know how to ride a bike and furthermore that you can ride a bike with around 200 different gears to make it work. With SEO you need a proven strategy to make it work well for your business. If you are looking at a DIY SEO strategy I would advise against it and consult a SEO professional first, at least to get you started.

@Jason – true. It really is 200 gears. Well said! The thing is that I ride a bike a lot, and make over 10,000 kms a year on it, so for me “riding a bike” is natural – something I do not think about while I am doing it.

I would also agree that doing the SEO while you are not sure what you are doing – can result in… unexpected results! :)
